The tops have died back, exposing the Waltham Butternut Squash resting on the bed of mulch straw. We also use boards to support squash and pumpkins if there is not enough straw exactly where they are growing. Once mature, I will bring them inside to a cool dry room, where the skin will harden further. We usually eat pumpkins throughout the Fall and start eating this kind of squash after Christmas. Most will keep until Spring, some even later.
