Thorn-less Blackberry stems

Most of the shoots in this photo are new growth this year. They will not have flowers or fruit until next year. After bearing once, the canes die and should be removed from the area since they can harbor disease. If you look closely at the left side of the photo you will see some blossoms and fruit forming on last years canes.
