When our power goes out we move food from the refrigerator to ice chests meant for picnicking. We keep 'ice packs' in our freezer year round just for this purpose. Because outdoor temps were cool but not far below freezing in our October 2011 8 day power outage, we set them on our door step, and cover them with the wet towel shown hanging behind them on the railing. Every other day or so, we would exchange the 'ice packs' with another set from our freezer, powered by a generator several hours a day. I wish we had purchased ice chests with more insulation, which are often sold for fishermen. I do think two smaller chests are more convenient than one larger one. We kept the most often used foods in one, and it is much easier to carry a smaller ice chest indoors at meal time.
