Late Flat Dutch Seedling

In this Connecticut mid July garden photo, our Winter cabbage has been transplanted to the garden. I have mulched it with a little with straw. To get off to a healthy start, it needs to be watered daily if there is no rain for the first week or two. The Early Jersey Wakefield Cabbage has all been harvested, and we have many heads in the crisper. Now it is time for the Winter Cabbage to grow and be ready for a Fall harvest. I plan to make a huge batch of sauerkraut again this year. Late cabbage also keeps in a root cellar or refrigerator for Winter meals like New England Boiled Dinners, Stuffed Cabbage, Stir fries, and is great in Soups. Planting and harvesting times do vary in other parts of the country with milder Winters.
