My laying flock enjoys vegetable table scraps. Not only do they add nutrition, it gives them something to peck at. The black hen is from my previous flock. She is the sole survivor, and more than ten years old. It took a little effort to get the new flock of hens to accept one which looks different. Her eggs look different too, so it would be possible to hatch them out separately if I had a rooster in the flock. Commercial breeders are not looking for layers which live a long and productive life, but homesteaders are. It would be an excellent project for a cottage industry.
