Straw mulched Hills

Here we have a row of hills which are sending out runners. Squash, Pumpkin and Cucumbers are all planted with grass on one side and early crops now harvested and cultivated in on the other side. The hills with the longest runners are not at the ends of the row. The straw will not only keep down weeds and gradually enrich the soil, it also makes a nice bed for the fruit as it forms.
