Older Peach trees

Our first two semi-dwarf peach trees started bearing a few bushels of fruit years before the apple trees. Peach trees don't live as long, so I plant two new ones about every ten years. Most of our peaches become wine, jam or jelly, or are canned whole or pureed as fruit. They are ready to eat before the pears and apples. The variety we chose is Reliance, and we get a good harvest almost every year. We are pretty far north for growing peaches. I also finish canning them before it is time to put the tomatoes in jars. It is important to spread out the harvests so you will not be overwhelmed. You can plan this by carefully studying information about the varieties you want to grow. With vegetables, you can also plant a little later if you need too. Making notes on your calender, or keeping a diary or log will be your other source of information. You will long remember, and want to avoid the year when two major crops were ready at the same time.
